Just below the Arctic Circle, situated between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, a remote land emerges from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, dominated by huge glaciers, ashen deserts, and mighty lava structures. Here, along the fault line that crosses the island from north to south, the incessant work of fire and ice traced a route that runs through a world of immeasurable desolation and enthralling beauty, the Icelandic Highlands.

Embark on an epic journey to traverse Iceland from its northern coast to the southern coast, tracing the tectonic plate line, riding specialised mountain bikes.

Arrival IN AKUREYRI

Upon arrival at Akureyri, you will be transferred to your hotel. You’ll have the evening to head into town and get dinner before heading over to the Forest Lagoon. The Forest Lagoon is a geothermic outdoor spa with a cold plunge, a sauna and a steam room. All nestled into a forest overlooking Akureyri and the Fjord! It will be our first opportunity to bond as a team over some drinks.

whale watching & expedition briefing

We start the day by jumping on a rib, heading out to sea, and whale watching. The area is known for humpbacks and minke whales. You may even see a Blue whale! Upon returning to the hotel, you’ll receive an expedition briefing, check your equipment, and pack your bikes. The evening is free for you to explore at your leisure.

Cycling into
the Highlands

The expedition begins as you depart from Godafoss and start your southbound journey. You’ll transition from lush green pastures to the stark volcanic zone. Navigate through the tracks to reach your first mountain hut, the Botni Hut.

exploring askja volcano

After breakfast, we head further south into the highlands. Then, venture off the beaten path towards the colossal and active Askja volcano. You’ll circumnavigate it and arrive at your next mountain hut. Optionally, you can be driven to the summit for breathtaking views of the volcanic lake and Viti, a geothermal crater.

through iceland’s remote wilderness

Today’s journey will take you through the most remote part of Iceland, hundreds of kilometers away from a paved road. This area, so desolate and sparsely populated, was once used by NASA to train astronauts for moon landings. Along the way, you’ll traverse previous eruption zones and reach a remote mountain hut near the Vatnajokull Glacier, the second-largest glacier in Europe.

River Crossings & Nydalir Hut

Today, you’ll face multiple river crossings, which can be challenging due to glacier-driven winds. Your destination is the Nyidalur Hut, located in the heart of Iceland. Here, you can relax, enjoy a beer, and celebrate your journey so far.

The DesertLike Landscape

Tracks improve as you head south, and the terrain transitions from black to orange, creating a desert-like atmosphere. You’ll encounter stunning vistas and briefly touch the tarmac before reaching your hotel for the evening. Take advantage of the opportunity to freshen up and relax.

The Start of Landmannalaugar

Today’s cycle moves into a new zone named Landmannalaugar. Famous for its steam breathing mountains and the multi-coloured hills. We cover a shorter distance than normal to reach the famous mountain hut nestled into the centre of the mountains. The hut has a natural hot spring right next to it so you can spend the evening relaxing in nature’s natural hot tub!

overcoming landmannalaugar

Today’s challenge involves climbing over and through Landmannalaugar, renowned as one of the most beautiful areas in Iceland. Prepare for some tough climbs, possibly requiring you to push your bikes uphill. We aim to reach a hut located in the south of the mountain range overlooking a huge beautiful lake!

Maelifell & Celebration

Expect a sandy challenge today as you make your way towards Maelifell, one of Iceland’s most stunning mountains. Leave the mountainous terrain behind and enter the lava sands. You might encounter clouds that lower visibility as you travel east around the final glacier.

Enjoy a lunch stop by Maelifell before tackling the last sandy section. Descend all the way towards the coastline, where you’ll pass over a stunning photo and video opportunity as you cycle across the top of a waterfall. The sand and lava transform into fields, and you’ll eventually reach the black sands of the South Coast. Congratulations, you’ve just crossed the entire breadth of Iceland! Spend the evening celebrating your achievement at a high-end local hotel.
